How To Greet Disneyland Paris Characters

Meeting characters at Disneyland Paris can feel so nerve-wracking — especially if you’re shy, introverted, socially awkward, or just suddenly forget how to act the second Mickey looks in your direction.

And honestly? You are definitely not the only one. We all experience this.

A lot of people imagine character meet-and-greets as this super confident, magical movie moment… but in reality, loads of guests walk up thinking:

  • “What do I even say?”

  • “Am I too old for this?”

  • “What if it’s awkward?”

  • “Why am I suddenly panicking over a giant duck?”

The good news is: Disney characters are literally trained to help make the interaction feel fun and comfortable. They expect nervous guests, quiet guests, awkward guests, emotional guests — all of it.

There’s no “right” way to meet a character.

First Things First — It’s Completely Normal To Feel Awkward

At Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park, characters meet thousands of guests every single day. Some people hug them instantly. Some people barely whisper hello. Some adults cry. Some kids hide behind their parents. The characters genuinely roll with all of it.

Easy Things To Say To Characters

You do not need a perfect conversation prepared. Even a simple hello is enough.

Here are easy conversation starters:

  • “Hi Mickey! I’m so excited to meet you!”

  • “Donald, you’re my favourite!”

  • “I love your outfit!”

  • “Can we get a photo together?”

  • “We came all the way here to see you!”

  • “This is my first Disney trip!”

  • “Who’s your favourite princess/prince/friend?”

And honestly, characters do a lot of the work for you. They’ll wave, point at your outfit, react to your ears, pose dramatically, or act silly to keep the interaction flowing.

If You’re Really Nervous… Let The Character Lead

This is probably the best tip.

You don’t have to perform or act extra confident. Just walk up smiling and let the character guide the moment. Disney performers are amazing at picking up your energy level.

If you’re quiet:

  • They’ll usually keep things sweet and simple.

If you’re excited:

  • They’ll match the chaos immediately.

If you freeze:

  • They’ll normally make a joke, wave, or pose to break the tension. (Thankful for this)

You genuinely cannot “fail” a Disney character interaction.

Great Characters For Shy Guests

Some characters naturally feel easier and calmer to meet if you’re nervous.

A few fan favourites:

  • Mickey Mouse - very warm and easygoing

  • Rafiki- gentle and comforting

  • Goofy - usually turns awkwardness into comedy instantly

  • Pluto - chaotic enough that nobody feels awkward anymore

  • Minnie Mouse - very sweet and interactive

Princesses can sometimes involve a little more conversation, but they’re also incredibly good at helping shy guests feel included.

A Few Tricks That Help

Wear Something Disney

Characters LOVE reacting to Disney ears, spirit jerseys, Loungefly bags, birthday badges, or themed outfits. It instantly gives them something to interact with.

Think Of One Question Beforehand

Having one tiny thing prepared can help calm the nerves.

Examples:

  • “What’s your favourite ride?”

  • “Who causes the most trouble?”

  • “Who takes the longest to get ready?”

Watch A Few Interactions While Queuing

This helps massively because you’ll realise there’s no script. Every interaction is different.

Remember: The Queue Moves Fast

Most meet&greets only last around 45 seconds to a 1.5 mins anyway, so there’s very little pressure.

Even though this guide is giving chronic overthinking vibes, literally just go with the flow. It's honestly not that bad and you're in Disney, you're allowed to release that inner child!

Thanks for reading! I hope you have the most wonderful trip x
